Why Do Coatings Fail?

Poor Preparation

If a concrete surface is not prepared properly, the coating will fail. Contaminates and sealers that can prevent the coating from bonding to the concrete must be removed, and the pores of the floor must be opened to allow penetration by the coating. Cleaning, acid etching, or sanding does not sufficiently prepare a floor for a coating application.

The only way to properly prepare a floor for a coating is by diamond grinding or bead blasting the surface. This removes all sealers and contaminates and opens up the pores of the floor to penetration by the coating. Rocksteady Concrete Coatings diamond grinds or bead blasts every floor coat—no exception!

Water in the Concrete

If a coating is installed over concrete with moisture content of over 5.5%, it will fail. Most existing concrete floors have moisture contents below 5.5%. But even if the environment around the floor is dry, it does not mean that the floor has moisture content below 5.5%.

The only way to be sure the moisture content of the entire floor is below 5.5% is to take measurements at 4’ intervals across the entire floor. Rocksteady Concrete Coatings provides a detailed assessment of a floor’s moisture content to every customer before making recommendations, signing a contract, or installing our products.

Improper Application

Most coating products have strict specifications for installation. They have very detailed mixing methods, mixing ratios, and methods of installation. If the specifications and instructions are not strictly followed, the integrity of the coating is compromised and the coating will fail.

Rocksteady Concrete Coatings’ installers are required to complete in-depth manufacturer’s training and attend regular continuing education sessions. We also provide a workmanship warranty on every coating we install.

Poor Product Selection

An inferior coating product will fail. And, no matter how great a coating product is, there are environments in which that product will still fail. So often, we see the wrong product used in the wrong environment.

Rocksteady Concrete Coatings carefully considers the desired performance of our coating to ensure it is suitable for each particular project/application. If we feel our coating is not suitable for your project, we will not install it. Plus, we install only high quality industrial-grade coatings—no exception!
